Drug intelligence / Profile preview
*Zanthoxylum caribaeum* extract is a botanical extract derived from the Colombian plant *Zanthoxylum caribaeum* (Rutaceae family). It contains a mixture of phytosterols and carbazole-like compounds that act as Liver X Receptor (LXR) agonists. Developed primarily by researchers at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia, the extract is being investigated for its neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory, and remyelinating properties. In preclinical models of multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer's disease, and cerebral ischemia, the extract has demonstrated the ability to reduce demyelination, astrogliosis, and microgliosis, showing therapeutic potential for central nervous system disorders.
