Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Zanthoxylum nitidum extract is a botanical extract derived from the roots of *Zanthoxylum nitidum* (Roxb.) DC., a traditional Chinese medicinal plant known as Liang Mianzhen. The extract is primarily composed of alkaloids, with nitidine chloride serving as the lead bioactive marker. It exhibits broad pharmacological activities, including anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antimicrobial, and anticancer properties. Its mechanism of action involves the modulation of several signaling pathways, notably ERK1/2, NF-κB, and the PPARγ/NF-κB/iNOS axis. Developed by Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine, it has been investigated for conditions such as inflammatory pain, ulcerative colitis, gastric ulcers, and oral health issues like gingivitis. It is widely recognized in China for its long-standing use in consumer oral care products and was the first Chinese medicine toothpaste approved by the FDA.
