Overview

**Zataria multiflora extract** is a herbal preparation derived from *Zataria multiflora* Boiss, a plant native to south-western Asia, traditionally used in Iranian medicine for conditions such as cough, respiratory ailments, and liver disorders[1][3]. The extract contains bioactive compounds, notably carvacrol, thymol, and linalool, which contribute to its pharmacological effects[1]. Mechanisms of action include anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, immunomodulatory, antimicrobial, bronchodilatory, and analgesic activities[1][2][3]. Its bronchodilatory effect is mediated by activation of beta-2 adrenergic receptors and inhibition of histamine H1 and muscarinic receptors[2]. The extract and its constituents reduce oxidative stress markers (malondialdehyde, nitric oxide), enhance antioxidant enzymes (catalase, superoxide dismutase, thiols), and modulate pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines (e.g., decreased TNF-α, increased IL-10 and IFN-γ)[1][2][5]. Zataria multiflora extract has been clinically evaluated for acute cough, pulmonary diseases (e.g., COPD), and allergic rhinitis, showing symptomatic relief and improved pulmonary function[2][3][4]. It is commonly administered as a syrup, oral drops, or capsules, and is generally regarded as safe, with mild reported adverse effects (dizziness, skin irritation, nausea)[2].
