Overview

ZB-001 is an investigational small molecule agonist of the free fatty acid receptor 1 (FFAR1), also known as G protein-coupled receptor 40 (GPR40), being developed by Zhejiang Zhongbao Pharmaceutical. The drug is primarily targeted for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus. GPR40 is highly expressed in pancreatic beta cells and plays a crucial role in the regulation of insulin secretion; its activation by ZB-001 promotes insulin release in a glucose-dependent manner, which potentially offers a therapeutic advantage by lowering blood glucose levels with a reduced risk of hypoglycemia. ZB-001 has entered Phase 1 clinical trials in China to assess its safety, tolerability, and pharmacokinetic profile in human subjects.
