ZD55-TRAIL is an **oncolytic adenovirus engineered to selectively replicate in tumor cells and deliver the gene encoding TRAIL (Tumor Necrosis Factor-Related Apoptosis-Inducing Ligand)**. TRAIL induces apoptosis specifically in cancer cells by binding to death receptors (DR4 and DR5), leading to caspase cascade activation with minimal toxicity to normal cells. ZD55 is a modified adenovirus with a deletion in the E1B 55-kDa gene, allowing selective replication in tumor cells with defective p53 pathways. ZD55-TRAIL has demonstrated potent anti-tumor efficacy in multiple preclinical models of cancers, including colorectal, lung, cervical, and hepatocellular carcinoma, often in combination strategies. It is primarily developed for cancer gene therapy and gene-virotherapy applications[2][4]. The product was developed by institutes in China, led by scientists at Shanghai Institutes for Biological Sciences and Zhejiang Sci-Tech University[7].
