Drug intelligence / Profile preview
ZD7114 (also known as ICI D7114) is a selective beta-3 adrenergic receptor agonist originally developed by Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI) and Zeneca (now AstraZeneca) for the treatment of obesity and type 2 diabetes (non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus). It acts by stimulating thermogenesis and lipolysis in brown adipose tissue (BAT). Although ZD7114 demonstrated potent thermogenic and anti-obesity effects in rodent models, clinical trials in humans failed to show significant increases in energy expenditure or weight loss, leading to the discontinuation of its clinical development. Additionally, ZD7114 has been shown to exhibit off-target alpha-1 adrenergic receptor antagonism in human prostate smooth muscle.
