Overview

Zeatin is a naturally occurring cytokinin, a class of plant hormones derived from adenine. It was first discovered in immature corn kernels from the genus Zea. Zeatin exists as two geometric isomers (cis and trans), with trans-zeatin being the more biologically active form. In plants, zeatin promotes cell division, stimulates growth of lateral buds, delays leaf senescence (aging), and can enhance resistance to certain pathogens. In vitro studies have shown that zeatin has gerontomodulatory and anti-aging effects on human skin fibroblasts by preserving their replicative lifespan without toxic effects at concentrations up to 200 μM[1][2][6]. Its primary mechanism of action is as an agonist for cytokinin receptors in plants.
