Zeaxanthin dipalmitate, also known as physalien, is a carotenoid fatty acid ester found naturally in high concentrations in wolfberry (Lycium barbarum). It serves as a highly bioavailable precursor to zeaxanthin, one of the two primary carotenoids that accumulate in the macular region of the human retina. In the eye, zeaxanthin acts as a potent antioxidant and a filter for high-energy blue light, protecting photoreceptor cells from oxidative damage. Clinical research has focused on its potential to increase macular pigment optical density (MPOD) and reduce the risk or progression of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Studies indicate that the esterified form may possess enhanced bioavailability compared to free, non-esterified zeaxanthin.
