Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Zemaphyte is a traditional Chinese herbal medicine formulation developed by Phytopharm as an oral treatment for atopic eczema (atopic dermatitis). It consists of a decoction of 10 specific Chinese herbs and was commercialized in the UK. Clinical trials demonstrated some efficacy, with improvements noted in erythema, surface damage, itching, and sleep quality compared to placebo. The mechanism of action appears to involve immunomodulatory effects such as inhibition of CD23 (low affinity immunoglobulin epsilon Fc receptor) expression on monocytes, reduction in serum IgE complexes, decreased soluble interleukin-2 receptor levels, and downregulation of adhesion molecules involved in inflammation. Zemaphyte’s development status is discontinued; it is no longer manufactured or available commercially.
