Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Zenalb 20% (brand name: Zenalb 20) is a human albumin solution for infusion containing 200 g/l (20%) of total protein, of which at least 95% is human albumin. Manufactured by Bio Products Laboratory Limited (BPL), it is a biologic derived from human plasma and administered intravenously. As a hyperoncotic colloid, its primary approved indication is the restoration and maintenance of circulating blood volume in patients with demonstrated volume deficiency. In an investigational context, Zenalb 20% is being studied in a Phase 4 randomized trial at Imperial College London for its ability to scavenge free haemoglobin and free haem when added to the cardiopulmonary bypass prime. This mechanism is intended to attenuate systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) and multiorgan failure by neutralizing pro-inflammatory mediators released during elective cardiac surgery, potentially reducing ICU length of stay.
