Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Zenalpha is a veterinary-specific injectable combination drug containing medetomidine hydrochloride and vatinoxan hydrochloride. Approved by the FDA in March 2022, it is indicated for use as a sedative and analgesic in dogs to facilitate clinical examinations, clinical procedures, and minor surgical procedures. Medetomidine acts as an alpha-2 adrenoceptor agonist, providing the necessary central sedation and analgesia. Vatinoxan is a peripherally selective alpha-2 adrenoceptor antagonist included to counteract the cardiovascular depressive effects typically associated with alpha-2 agonists, such as bradycardia and decreased cardiac output, while preserving the desired central effects. The product was developed by Vetcare Oy and is marketed in the United States by Dechra Veterinary Products.
