Zengye Roujin Decoction

Zengye Roujin Decoction is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) herbal formula developed by the Second Affiliated Hospital of Anhui University of Traditional Chinese Medicine for the treatment of post-stroke muscular hypertonia (spasticity). The formula is based on the TCM principles of 'Zengye' (increasing fluids) and 'Roujin' (softening tendons), aiming to address the pathogenesis of Yin deficiency and blood stasis that leads to tendon contracture and muscle stiffness. It typically comprises a combination of herbs including Scrophulariae Radix, Rehmanniae Radix, Ophiopogonis Radix, Paeoniae Radix Alba, and Glycyrrhizae Radix. Pharmacologically, the decoction is thought to modulate the balance between excitatory and inhibitory neurotransmitters, specifically by enhancing GABAergic signaling and inhibiting glutamatergic pathways. It also exhibits anti-inflammatory properties by reducing systemic levels of cytokines such as TNF-alpha and IL-6. This multi-target approach helps to lower muscle tone, improve limb motor function, and enhance the quality of life for patients recovering from ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke.
