Overview

Zensana is an oral spray formulation of ondansetron, a small molecule 5-HT3 (serotonin type 3) receptor antagonist. Developed by Hana Biosciences under license from NovaDel Pharma, it was designed as a multidose delivery system for the prevention of chemotherapy-induced, radiotherapy-induced, and post-operative nausea and vomiting. The oral spray modality was intended to provide a convenient alternative for patients who have difficulty swallowing tablets (dysphagia). Although a New Drug Application (NDA) was submitted to the FDA in 2006 via the 505(b)(2) regulatory pathway, Hana Biosciences withdrew the application in 2007 due to formulation stability issues, and the drug was never commercially launched.
