Overview

ZG-001 is a novel, small molecule, non-competitive N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist being developed by Shanghai Zhigen Pharmaceutical Technology for the treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD). Designed as a rapid-acting antidepressant (RAAD), ZG-001 aims to provide faster symptom relief compared to traditional monoaminergic antidepressants, which typically require several weeks to achieve therapeutic effects. By blocking the NMDA receptor, ZG-001 modulates glutamatergic neurotransmission, a pathway thought to be critical in restoring synaptic plasticity and neural connectivity in brain regions affected by depression. The drug is administered orally and is currently undergoing early-stage clinical evaluation to assess its safety, tolerability, and pharmacokinetics in patients.
