Overview

Zhi Ke San (Cough-Stopping Powder) is a classical Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) formula first recorded in the Qing Dynasty text *Yi Xue Xin Wu* (Medical Revelations). It is composed of seven botanical ingredients: *Platycodon grandiflorum* (Jie Geng), *Schizonepeta tenuifolia* (Jing Jie), *Aster tataricus* (Zi Wan), *Tussilago farfara* (Kuan Dong Hua), *Stemona sessilifolia* (Bai Bu), *Citrus reticulata* (Chen Pi), and *Glycyrrhiza uralensis* (Gan Cao). The formula is indicated for coughs caused by external wind-cold or those that persist after the initial cold symptoms have resolved. In modern clinical research, Zhi Ke San has been investigated by institutions such as the Liaoning University of Traditional Chinese Medicine for its efficacy in treating pediatric pneumonia, often as part of an integrative treatment plan combining internal herbal medicine with external TCM therapies.
