Overview

Zhi Sou San (止嗽散) is a classic traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) herbal formula dating back to the Ming Dynasty. It is primarily used for treating coughs that persist after external wind-cold invasion has mostly resolved. The formula consists of seven herbs—Aster Root (Zi Wan), Stemona Root (Bai Bu), Balloon Flower Root (Jie Geng), Schizonepeta Herb (Jing Jie), Willowleaf Swallowwort Rhizome (Bai Qian), Tangerine Peel (Chen Pi), and Licorice Root (Gan Cao). Its main actions are to stop coughing, transform phlegm, disperse wind pathogens from the exterior, ventilate lung qi, and restore normal respiratory function. In TCM theory, it addresses patterns such as lingering cough due to wind-cold or phlegm in the lungs. Modern uses include upper respiratory tract infections and bronchitis with persistent cough[1][2][3][4][5][6].
