Zhibituo is a proprietary Chinese medicine containing red yeast rice (Monascus purpureus) as a main active ingredient, often formulated with other herbs. The primary therapeutic effect is lipid-lowering, working mainly through inhibition of HMG-CoA reductase, which reduces cholesterol synthesis in the liver. The main bioactive component, lovastatin (monacolin K), is identical to the statin drug lovastatin.
