Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Zhichi Shumian Fang is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) herbal formula developed primarily for the treatment of insomnia, specifically targeting the "internal heat" or "stagnation-heat" pattern in TCM diagnostics. The formula is an evolution of the classic *Zhizi Chichi Tang* (Gardenia and Prepared Soybean Decoction) from the *Shanghan Lun*. It typically comprises a combination of *Gardenia jasminoides* (Zhizi), *Fermented Soybean* (淡豆豉), *Ziziphus jujuba var. spinosa* (Suanzaoren), and other herbs known for their sedative and heat-clearing properties. Pharmacologically, active components such as geniposide from Gardenia and jujubosides from Ziziphus are thought to interact with the GABAergic system and GLP-1 receptors to exert hypnotic and anxiolytic effects. The formula has been evaluated in clinical trials, notably at Guang'anmen Hospital, to assess its efficacy in improving sleep quality, reducing sleep latency, and alleviating associated anxiety symptoms in patients with chronic insomnia.
