Overview

Zhimu polyphenol (also known as SY-001) is a botanical drug candidate developed by Suzhou Siyuan Pharmaceutical Technology Co., Ltd. for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Extracted from the rhizome of *Anemarrhena asphodeloides*, this polyphenol-rich fraction—containing high concentrations of mangiferin—functions through a multi-targeted mechanism. It improves insulin sensitivity by inhibiting protein tyrosine phosphatase 1B (PTP1B), an enzyme that negatively regulates the insulin signaling pathway. Additionally, it inhibits alpha-glucosidase to delay carbohydrate absorption and activates adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK) to enhance glucose uptake in peripheral tissues and suppress hepatic gluconeogenesis. The drug has progressed into Phase 2 clinical trials in China.
