Overview
Zhixiong Capsule (ZXC) is a traditional Chinese patent medicine composed of an equal mixture of extracts from leech, Ligusticum chuanxiong Hort., Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge, Leonurus japonicus Houtt., and Pueraria lobata (Willd.) Ohwi. It has been used in clinical practice for the treatment of atherosclerosis and related cardiovascular conditions. The primary mechanism involves lipid-lowering effects—significantly reducing LDL-C and total cholesterol while increasing HDL-C levels—and anti-atherosclerotic actions such as alleviating collagen deposition and mineralization in arteries. Network pharmacology analysis identified key active components including daidzein, 4-methylenemiltirone, isorhamnetin, and 2-isopropyl-8-methylphenanthrene-3,4-dione. Confirmed molecular targets include IL-4, IL-13 (cytokines), MAPK1/14 (mitogen-activated protein kinases), JUN (transcription factor), and P53 (tumor suppressor). These mechanisms contribute to its efficacy against formed atherosclerotic plaques[1].
