Drug intelligence / Profile preview
The ZhJ-III hybrid bioartificial liver is an extracorporeal device designed to provide temporary support for patients with acute or acute-on-chronic liver failure. It is a type of "hybrid" artificial liver system that combines biological components—typically hepatocytes or hepatocyte-like cells—with non-biological filtration and detoxification processes. The system functions by circulating the patient's plasma through a bioreactor containing viable hepatic cells, which perform essential metabolic and synthetic functions such as ammonia detoxification and albumin synthesis. This approach aims to bridge patients to recovery or transplantation by reducing inflammation, supporting native liver regeneration, and improving survival outcomes in severe hepatic failure[2][6]. The mechanism of action involves both direct biochemical processing by the embedded living cells and physical removal of toxins via filtration.
