Zhujing Pill is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formula widely utilized for treating various ocular conditions, including diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration (such as high myopia macular degeneration and age-related macular degeneration), and retinitis pigmentosa. Its therapeutic efficacy is attributed to a multi-component, multi-target, and multi-pathway mechanism. Key actions include anti-angiogenic effects, mediated by targeting the VEGF signaling pathway and Protein kinase C alpha (PKC-α), as well as anti-inflammatory properties through the reduction of cytokines like Interleukin-6 (IL-6) and Tumor necrosis factor (TNF). The pill also exhibits antioxidant effects by activating pathways such as Nrf2, leading to the upregulation of Heme oxygenase 1 (HO-1), and increasing levels of Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) and Glutathione Peroxidase (GSH-Px). Additionally, it is involved in regulating retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cholesterol metabolism and modulating gut microbiota, and influences the expression of LPCAT1, CHRNA7, and NOS2 in the context of myopia progression.
