Drug intelligence / Profile preview
**Zicam** is a branded line of over-the-counter homeopathic products primarily marketed to reduce the duration and severity of common cold symptoms, such as nasal congestion. Its key active ingredients are **zincum aceticum** (zinc acetate, 2X dilution) and **zincum gluconicum** (zinc gluconate, 1X or 2X dilution), available in formats including oral rapidmelts, lozenges, medicated drops, oral mist, and previously nasal gels/swabs (discontinued due to safety issues). Originally developed by Matrixx Initiatives and now owned by **Church & Dwight**, Zicam leverages zinc's potential antiviral effects against rhinoviruses by targeting ICAM-1 receptors, though labeled homeopathic to bypass standard FDA efficacy testing. Intranasal versions were recalled in 2009 after over 130 reports of permanent anosmia (loss of smell) from zinc-induced olfactory epithelium damage; current oral products remain available but lack robust clinical evidence of effectiveness beyond placebo.[1][2][4][7]
