Zicam Cough Melts

Zicam Cough Melts is an over-the-counter antitussive medication indicated for the temporary relief of cough due to minor throat and bronchial irritation, such as those associated with the common cold or inhaled irritants. Unlike many other products under the Zicam brand that are marketed as homeopathic remedies, Zicam Cough Melts is a conventional pharmaceutical product containing the active ingredient dextromethorphan hydrobromide. Dextromethorphan is a synthetic d-isomer of the codeine analog levorphanol and acts centrally in the medulla oblongata to raise the cough threshold. Its primary mechanism of action involves agonism of the sigma-1 receptor and non-competitive antagonism of the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor. The product is uniquely formulated as an orally disintegrating tablet (melt) to allow for rapid dissolution and administration without the need for water.
