Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Zicao is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb derived from the roots of *Arnebia euchroma* (Royle) Johnst. or *Lithospermum erythrorhizon* Sieb. et Zucc. In the context of Zhejiang Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital, it is utilized as a primary active ingredient in hospital-made preparations, such as Zicao Oil or Zicao Ointment, specifically for the treatment of inflammatory skin conditions like atopic dermatitis. The therapeutic effects are largely attributed to naphthoquinone compounds, primarily shikonin and its derivatives (e.g., acetylshikonin). These compounds exhibit potent anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties. Mechanistically, Zicao extracts inhibit the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and modulate immune responses, which are critical in the pathogenesis of atopic dermatitis. It is commonly applied topically to cool the blood, detoxify, and promote wound healing.
