Overview
ZICTHORU Tape (HFT-290) is a systemic transdermal patch containing diclofenac sodium, developed by Hisamitsu Pharmaceutical. Unlike conventional topical diclofenac patches designed for local application, ZICTHORU is a systemic nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) delivery system that maintains stable plasma concentrations of diclofenac over a 24-hour period. It is approved in Japan for the treatment of cancer pain and various chronic musculoskeletal pain conditions, including low back pain, osteoarthritis, periarthritis of the shoulder, and tenosynovitis. By delivering the drug transdermally, ZICTHORU aims to provide continuous pain relief while potentially mitigating the gastrointestinal adverse effects associated with the peak plasma levels seen with oral diclofenac formulations. Its mechanism of action involves the inhibition of cyclooxygenase-1 (COX-1) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) enzymes, which prevents the synthesis of prostaglandins involved in pain and inflammation.
