Overview

Zidovudine (also known as AZT) is a nucleoside analogue reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) used in the management and treatment of HIV-1 infection. It was the first antiretroviral medication approved for HIV/AIDS and is typically used in combination with other antiretrovirals. Zidovudine works by inhibiting the enzyme reverse transcriptase that HIV uses to make DNA from its RNA, thereby reducing viral replication. It is indicated for slowing disease progression in patients with advanced or early symptoms of HIV infection and for preventing mother-to-child transmission during pregnancy and birth[1][4][5]. The drug does not cure or prevent HIV infection or AIDS but helps lower viral load and supports immune function[1][9].
