This refers to the antiretroviral therapy (ART) regimens evaluated in a Phase 4 clinical trial conducted by the International Antiviral Therapy Evaluation Center (IATEC). The study compared the older thymidine analogue-based combination of zidovudine and lamivudine (AZT/3TC) with the newer combination of tenofovir disoproxil fumarate and emtricitabine (TDF/FTC). Both regimens consist of nucleoside/nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) that inhibit the HIV-1 reverse transcriptase enzyme, preventing viral replication. The primary focus of the trial was to determine if switching from AZT/3TC to TDF/FTC could prevent the progression of or reverse peripheral lipoatrophy, a condition characterized by fat loss that is frequently associated with older thymidine analogue NRTIs like zidovudine.
