Zidovudine monophosphate is the phosphorylated metabolite of zidovudine (AZT), a nucleoside analog reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI). It is not itself an approved pharmaceutical drug, but rather an intermediate formed during the intracellular activation of zidovudine. Zidovudine is first phosphorylated by thymidine kinase to form zidovudine monophosphate, which is then further phosphorylated to its active triphosphate form. The active triphosphate inhibits HIV reverse transcriptase by acting as a chain terminator during viral DNA synthesis, thereby blocking HIV replication[1][4][6]. Zidovudine monophosphate has been studied primarily in experimental and research contexts.
