Drug intelligence / Profile preview
ZIGIR (zinc granule indicator) is a cell-permeable, fluorescent zinc-chelating dye developed by researchers at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. It is designed to selectively label zinc-rich secretory granules, particularly insulin-containing granules in pancreatic beta cells, with high specificity and sensitivity. ZIGIR exhibits a greater than 100-fold fluorescence enhancement upon binding to zinc (Zn2+) and is refractory to physiological pH fluctuations, making it highly suitable for imaging acidic compartments like secretory granules. It is used as a diagnostic and research imaging agent to visualize islet cells, monitor insulin granule dynamics, and assess islet revascularization in vivo after transplantation.
