Indian Immunologicals Limited (IIL), in partnership with Griffith University, is developing a codon de-optimized live attenuated vaccine for the prevention of Zika virus infection. The vaccine candidate utilizes codon de-optimization technology to modify the viral genome, creating a version of the virus that can replicate enough to trigger a robust immune response—mimicking a natural infection—without causing the disease itself. This approach aims to provide long-lasting immunity against Zika virus, which is primarily transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes and is linked to severe birth defects like microcephaly and other congenital malformations. As of September 2024, the project has moved into Phase I clinical trials in India, supported and funded by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).
