Overview

Zika virus immune globulin (ZIKV-Ig) is a purified human immunoglobulin product containing polyclonal antibodies that neutralize the Zika virus. It is derived from pooled plasma of healthy adult donors with elevated levels of anti-Zika antibodies and manufactured using a hyperimmune platform process. The primary indication for ZIKV-Ig is prophylaxis against Zika virus infection in at-risk populations, including women of childbearing potential and pregnant women. The drug acts by providing passive immunity through its content of neutralizing IgG antibodies targeting the Zika virus[1][4][5]. Emergent BioSolutions developed this investigational biologic, which has undergone phase 1 clinical trials to assess safety and pharmacokinetics[6]. The mechanism involves direct viral neutralization via polyclonal antibody binding.
