Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Zilactin is a brand of over-the-counter topical medications used for the temporary relief of pain associated with oral lesions, including cold sores, fever blisters, and canker sores. Manufactured by Blairex Laboratories, the product line features two primary active ingredients depending on the specific formulation: Zilactin Early Relief Cold Sore contains 10% benzyl alcohol, while Zilactin-B contains benzocaine. Both ingredients function as local anesthetics by inhibiting sodium channels in nerve membranes, thereby blocking the conduction of pain signals. A distinguishing characteristic of Zilactin gels is their ability to form a bioadhesive, protective film over the sore, which shields the area from external irritants and provides sustained pain relief for up to six hours.
