zileuton extended release

Zileuton extended release is an oral small molecule drug used for the prevention and long-term management of asthma in adults and children aged 12 years and older. It is not indicated for the relief of acute asthma attacks. Zileuton's mechanism of action involves selective inhibition of 5-lipoxygenase, an enzyme critical to leukotriene synthesis from arachidonic acid. By blocking leukotriene formation (including LTB4, LTC4, LTD4, LTE4), it reduces airway inflammation, bronchoconstriction, edema, and mucus secretion associated with asthma. The drug is generally well-tolerated but can cause liver enzyme elevations; regular monitoring of liver function is recommended during therapy[1][6][9].
