Overview

Zilpaterol is a synthetic small molecule β2-adrenergic agonist used as a feed additive in cattle to promote growth and improve feed efficiency. Its primary mechanism of action is stimulation of β2-adrenergic receptors, which enhances skeletal muscle growth, increases carcass yield, and improves the muscle-to-fat ratio by reducing fat deposition and preventing protein degradation. Zilpaterol is administered orally during the last three to six weeks before slaughter, with a short withdrawal period to allow drug clearance from tissues. The drug is marketed under the brand name Zilmax by Intervet, a subsidiary of Merck & Co., and is not approved for use in lactating dairy cattle.
