ziltivekimab (Novo Nordisk)

Ziltivekimab is an investigational, fully human IgG1 κ monoclonal antibody designed to target the interleukin-6 (IL-6) ligand. By binding directly to IL-6, it prevents the cytokine from interacting with both soluble and membrane-bound IL-6 receptors, thereby inhibiting downstream pro-inflammatory signaling pathways that contribute to the progression of atherosclerosis and systemic inflammation. Originally developed by Corvidia Therapeutics and subsequently acquired by Novo Nordisk, ziltivekimab is specifically optimized for cardiovascular indications. It is currently being evaluated in large-scale Phase 3 clinical trials, including the ARTEMIS and ZEPHYR studies, to determine its efficacy in reducing major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) and modifying atherosclerotic plaque in high-risk patients, such as those who have recently experienced a myocardial infarction.
