Zimislecel (formerly VX-880) is an investigational allogeneic human stem cell-derived, fully differentiated pancreatic islet cell therapy developed by Vertex Pharmaceuticals. It is designed to replace the insulin-producing pancreatic beta cells that are destroyed in individuals with type 1 diabetes (T1D), particularly those who experience recurrent severe hypoglycemic events and impaired awareness of hypoglycemia despite optimal management. Zimislecel involves a single infusion of functional islet cells into the hepatic portal vein and requires standard chronic immunosuppression to prevent rejection. The goal of this therapy is to restore endogenous glucose-responsive insulin production, potentially eliminating or reducing the need for exogenous insulin and improving glycemic control as well as quality of life for patients with severe T1D[2][3][6].
