Overview

Zinc is a chemical element with the symbol Zn and atomic number 30. It is a bluish-white, lustrous metal that is brittle at room temperature but becomes malleable when heated to around 100–150°C. Zinc is an essential trace element in biology, playing critical roles in enzyme function, immune system regulation, cell division, and protein synthesis. In medicine and nutrition, zinc compounds (such as zinc sulfate or zinc gluconate) are used as dietary supplements to treat or prevent zinc deficiency. Mechanistically, biologically active forms of zinc act as cofactors for numerous enzymes (over 300), stabilize protein structures such as "zinc fingers" in DNA-binding proteins, and modulate immune responses by influencing signaling pathways within cells[1][2][6]. Industrially, metallic zinc is widely used for galvanization (coating iron/steel to prevent rust), alloy production (notably brass), batteries (as anode material), and various chemical syntheses[3][6].
