Zinc acetate is a small molecule mineral and oral chelating agent used primarily for the maintenance treatment of Wilson disease, a rare genetic disorder characterized by copper accumulation in tissues such as the liver and brain. Its main mechanism involves inducing the production of metallothionein in enterocytes (intestinal cells), which binds copper and prevents its absorption from food. The bound copper is then eliminated via feces after enterocyte turnover. Zinc acetate may also be used to treat or prevent zinc deficiency and has additional roles in wound healing, immune function, and as a cofactor for numerous enzymes[1][3][4][5][6][8].
