Overview
Zinc acexamate is a zinc salt of acexamic acid (6-acetamidohexanoic acid) that functions primarily as a cytoprotective and anti-ulcer agent. It was developed by Laboratorios Viñas and has been used clinically for the treatment of gastric and duodenal ulcers. Its mechanism involves the stimulation of gastric mucus production, inhibition of histamine release from mast cells, and the promotion of tissue repair through the delivery of zinc ions. Beyond its gastroprotective applications, zinc acexamate is being investigated for its potential therapeutic benefits in advanced chronic liver disease, where it may help address zinc deficiency, reduce ammonia levels, and mitigate hepatic encephalopathy.
