Overview

Zinc dibutyryl lysinate, also known as zinc dibutyroyllysinate (ZDL), is a novel compound composed of zinc, lysine, and butyric acid moieties. It is being investigated as a potential skincare ingredient due to its demonstrated bioactivity in human skin models. Studies have shown that ZDL can increase the expression of genes involved in epidermal differentiation and retinol metabolism, while simultaneously decreasing the expression of microphthalmia-associated transcription factor (MITF) and other genes related to melanogenesis. Furthermore, it promotes a dose-dependent increase in extracellular matrix proteins such as collagen I, collagen IV, and prolidase in skin fibroblasts, and reduces melanin secretion in melanocytes. These effects suggest its potential application in addressing conditions related to melanocyte hyperactivity, pigmentation, inflammation, and skin aging.
