Overview

Zinc iodide (ZnI2) is an inorganic chemical compound with diverse applications. In organic synthesis, it functions as a Lewis acid catalyst, facilitating various reactions such as [3+2] cyclizations, Barbier-type reactions, and the allenylation of terminal alkynes. It is also a key component in the development of high-capacity and ultra-stable aqueous zinc-iodine batteries, where it plays a role in regulating iodide ions and suppressing zinc dendrite formation. Furthermore, zinc iodide is explored as an additive in perovskite materials to enhance thermal phase stability, carrier lifetimes, and overall performance in optoelectronic devices. Therapeutically, particularly when combined with dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), it has been investigated for its potential to treat chronic inflammatory lung diseases by increasing the expression and activity of matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2), thereby reducing collagen deposition. This combination is also hypothesized to exhibit broad virucidal effects against DNA and RNA viruses, including SARS-CoV-2, along with anti-inflammatory, immunomodulating, antifibrotic, antibacterial, antifungal, and antioxidative properties.
