Overview

Zinc lactobionate is a topical small molecule salt composed of zinc and lactobionic acid, developed for the treatment of atopic dermatitis (AD). It functions as a pH-modulating agent that restores the skin's natural acidic mantle, which is typically compromised (elevated pH) in AD patients. By lowering the skin surface pH to approximately 4.5, zinc lactobionate inhibits pH-dependent serine proteases, such as chymotrypsin-like protease (KLK7), which are responsible for accelerated desquamation and barrier degradation. Additionally, the acidic environment promotes the activity of enzymes involved in lipid processing, thereby strengthening the epidermal permeability barrier and reducing transepidermal water loss (TEWL). Clinical studies have demonstrated that zinc lactobionate emollient creams significantly improve skin hydration, reduce sensitivity to irritants, and lower SCORAD (Scoring Atopic Dermatitis) indices.
