Overview

Zinc orotate is a compound consisting of zinc bound to orotic acid. It is primarily used as a dietary supplement to address and prevent zinc deficiency. Zinc is an essential trace element involved in numerous biological processes, including immune function, metabolism, enzyme activity, and cellular signaling[1][2][5]. The orotate form is believed to facilitate the transport of zinc across cell membranes more efficiently than some other forms due to its unique carrier properties[6]. Zinc orotate dissociates at the level of cytoplasmic structures such as mitochondria, releasing bioavailable ionic zinc within cells[6]. There are claims that it may be better tolerated with fewer side effects compared to other forms of supplemental zinc; however, robust clinical evidence for superiority over other forms remains limited[6]. Zinc orotate has been explored experimentally for potential roles in supporting immune health and possibly influencing conditions associated with low intracellular zinc levels.
