Zinc oxide and avobenzone are two active ingredients commonly found together in sunscreen formulations. In contrast, avobenzone at 3% concentration retains only 51% of its UVA protection and 75% of its UVB protection. **Safety Considerations** Zinc oxide is generally considered safe and is approved for use in concentrations up to 25%. Avobenzone is also considered safe but is limited to a maximum concentration of 3% in sunscreen formulations in the United States. When avobenzone breaks down in sunlight or chlorine, it can disintegrate into various organic compounds including aromatic acids, aldehydes, phenols, and acetophenones, which may have adverse health effects. **Common Formulations** These ingredients are often found together in sunscreen products along with other active ingredients such as octinoxate, octocrylene, and oxybenzone to provide comprehensive sun protection. The combination helps create broad-spectrum sunscreens that protect against both UVA and UVB rays. **Usage** Sunscreens containing zinc oxide and avobenzone should be applied liberally 15 minutes before sun exposure and reapplied at least every 2 hours, especially after swimming or sweating.
