Overview

Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) are inorganic nanomaterials widely investigated for their therapeutic potential in oncology, metabolic disorders, and inflammatory conditions. They exhibit intrinsic anticancer activity through the release of zinc ions (Zn2+) and the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which induce oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, and subsequent apoptosis in malignant cells. ZnO NPs are also utilized as photosensitizers in photodynamic therapy (PDT) and photocatalytic treatments, where UV or visible light activation enhances their cytotoxicity. Beyond oncology, they have shown antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties in models of obesity, chronic kidney disease, and diabetes. Their synthesis often involves "green" methods using plant extracts or probiotics to improve biocompatibility and reduce toxicity.
