Zinc oxide nanoparticles-luteolin is a combination nanomedicine consisting of zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles functionalized or loaded with the natural flavonoid luteolin. This formulation leverages the synergistic properties of both components to enhance therapeutic efficacy and bioavailability. The primary mechanisms include induction of oxidative stress in cancer cells, activation of autophagy, inhibition of epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), and antimicrobial activity. The nanocomposite demonstrates selective cytotoxicity against tumor cells while sparing normal cells[1][4]. It also exhibits significant antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects by modulating redox-sensitive pathways and microRNA expression (notably miR-124), which may contribute to neuroprotection in diabetic models[2][5]. Additionally, it has shown promise in managing insulin resistance associated with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and type 2 diabetes mellitus by improving glycemic control and reducing oxidative stress[7]. Antimicrobial studies indicate effectiveness against cariogenic bacteria such as Streptococcus mutans[3][6].
