Zinc phenolsulfonate is an organometallic compound, typically found as a white, odorless powder or crystalline solid. It is used primarily as an antimicrobial and astringent agent in cosmetics and personal care products, as well as in antiperspirants, insecticide formulations, and ophthalmic solutions for the treatment of minor eye irritation and conjunctivitis[1][2][3][5][7]. Its mechanism of action depends on its application but generally involves disruption of microbial cell membranes leading to antimicrobial effects; it may also reduce inflammation by decreasing production of inflammatory mediators such as cytokines and prostaglandins[6]. Zinc phenolsulfonate has been shown to be effective against various bacteria (e.g., Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli) and fungi (e.g., Candida albicans), with additional evidence suggesting roles in wound healing through stimulation of fibroblast growth and angiogenesis[6]. The compound is considered safe for use in cosmetics at current concentrations[4][8].
