Zinc phthalocyanine is a synthetic, aromatic macrocyclic compound with a central zinc ion and a structure analogous to porphyrin. It is widely used as a photosensitizer in photodynamic therapy (PDT) for cancer, owing to its strong absorption in the red/near-infrared region and its ability to generate reactive oxygen species when photoactivated. Upon light activation, zinc phthalocyanine can transfer energy to molecular oxygen, producing singlet oxygen that induces cytotoxic effects in targeted cells. The drug also sees application as a dye and catalyst in industrial processes, and as a functional component in thin-film electronics and gas sensors[1][3][5][6].
