Zinc Substituted Heme C is a synthetic metalloporphyrin in which the central iron atom of heme c is replaced by zinc. This substitution creates a molecule with altered electronic and photophysical properties compared to native heme c. Zinc-substituted heme c (Zn-heme c) is primarily used as an experimental probe in biochemistry and structural biology, especially for studying protein folding, electron transfer, and fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) due to its intrinsic fluorescent properties. The replacement of iron with zinc does not significantly alter the overall structure or stability of cytochrome c but eliminates redox activity, making it useful for mechanistic studies where redox-inactive analogs are required[5][9]. It has no known therapeutic indications or clinical use as a pharmaceutical agent.
